Huibert Sabelis

For years the landscape in the oeuvre of Huibert Sabelis has been somewhat dormant. It is true that it was visible and present everywhere, but it was used as scenery. Harmonious, stylized human figures, exotic flowers or enchanting animals in the foreground demanded most of the attention. The landscape played a supporting role and made it self less important or subservient toward the anecdotal picture. Ultimately, in the first place, everything revolved around the balanced situations and settings, which drew the spectator totally.

In the recent works of Sabelis, the landscape finally has a well-deserved prominent position. Everything that could divert the attention of the compositions, which are conceived as pure landscapes, has been kept outside of the image forming process by the artist. The landscape, which was always latently present, has awakened in full glory. This does not imply that one can speak of a rigorous course change. The image language of Huibert Sabelis has mainly remained unchanged. He still strives toward a harmonious synthesis, and the sublimated, imaginary landscapes still represent his passion for beauty. The landscape has become the domain of an ?artist, who wants to represent the unseen, ?unknown land. This striving typifies a full length portrait of Sabelis.
